Cuadrado is a special player- Henry

Thierry Henry believes Juan Cuadrado will be a hit at Chelsea, with the Fiorentina winger poised to complete a €33 million move to Stamford Bridge before the transfer deadline.

Fiorentina head coach Vincenzo Montella confirmed on Friday that Cuadrado’s move to the Premier League leaders is all but completed, with the player himself posting an emotional goodbye to the Viola on Instagram.

And Henry is sure Cuadrado will showcase his qualities in England once his move is finalised, with Andre Schurrle set to join Wolfsburg to make way for the incoming Colombian.

"Everybody saw the World Cup, the way he performed – he’s a special player," Henry told Sky Sports.

"He can beat anyone at any time and he’s a proper winger also – that’s something you don’t see often now, guys that want to go down the line and beat people and cross.

"That’s what you want if you’re a striker, so I think he will be – if he comes to Chelsea – a special player.

"He won’t surprise people because everybody saw him at the World Cup, but he’s a special talent."

Manchester United sign El Fitouri as Amos joins Bolton

Manchester United have completed the signing of defender Sadiq El Fitouri from Salford City while Ben Amos has joined Bolton Wanderers on loan.

El Fitouri - who spent some of his teenage years with Manchester City - only made his debut for the non-league outfit in early January but impressed during a trial at Old Trafford.

Former United stars Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Phil Neville own Salford and are reported to have been instrumental in his move to the 20-time English champions.

"This is honestly a dream come true for me and I have to thank Salford City for the chance, as well as the faith they have shown in me," El Fitouri told United's official website.

"I am really looking forward to what happens next and to be given the opportunity to do so at Manchester United is unbelievable."

Amos, meanwhile, joins Bolton on loan to help cover for Adam Bogdan after he suffered an ankle ligament injury in training.

The 24-year-old has previously enjoyed loan spells at five other clubs including Hull City, but has fallen down the pecking order after Victor Valdes's signing.

He could make his debut against Wolves on Saturday, though he is not available for the Trotters' FA Cup replay with Liverpool on Wednesday.

Arsenal are my dream but I'm happy at Newcastle- Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko has reiterated his admiration for Arsenal but insists he is not looking to leave Newcastle United during the current transfer window.

The midfielder described the Gunners as the "club of my heart" earlier in January and outlined his desire to leave St James' Park for a team playing in the Champions League.

Newcastle issued a 'hands-off' warning for Sissoko, amid reported interest from Arsene Wenger and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, and the France international now maintains that he is happy at St James' Park, despite his admiration for the north London club.

"Arsenal made me dream when I was a youngster. Patrick Vieira was my idol. I saw myself in him," he told BeIn Sports.

When asked if PSG or Arsenal were interested in signing him, he added: "You will have to ask my agent. For now, I'm a Newcastle player and I am happy at the club.

"I want to play in major competitions and I want to do it with this team."

VP’s office under APC not a spare tyre -Osinbajo

The Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said the office of the Vice President under an APC governmenr will not be a “spare tyre.”

A statement issued by the APC Presidential Campaign organisation and signed by the media director, Alhaji Garba Shehu, quoted Osinbajo as saying this at a parley with health care professionals under the auspices of the Health Care Federation of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos.

Osinbajo said that the party had made adequate plans to ensure that the National Economic Council, which is under the office of the Vice President, was made a vibrant body in line with the provisions of the constitution.

The statement also quoted Osinbajo as saying that an APC government would partner with the private sector for effective healthcare delivery.

He said the party would also ensure the lowering of the cost of funds to provide easy access to capital, to address the crisis in the power sector and expend a minimum of one billion dollars on health insurance.

The APC Vice Presidential candidate said that corruption would be tackled head-on as a first step to tackling the nation’s myriad of problems.

“We have to deal with corruption very seriously,” he said.

He said that the party’s free education policy would, in the first instance, be available at primary and secondary school levels, and later extended to tertiary levels but limited to science, technology, engineering, maths and education.

INEC extends PVC collection to Feb 8

The Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the deadline for collection of Permanent Voter Cards to Sunday,   February 8, 2015.

This new date is contained in a statement on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the national chairman of the commission, Kayode   Idowu.

Idowu, who explained that the new date supersedes the earlier deadline of Saturday,   January, 31, also disclosed to The PUNCH that INEC had received the last batch of 3.4 million PVCs.

He said in the statement that the extension was intended to give those who had yet to collect their PVCs the opportunity to do so.

Idowu, who stressed that the commission was ready for the polls, enjoined all   registered persons to ensure that they   collected their cards on or before February 8.

“The commission reaffirms its determination to make the 2015 elections free, fair, credible and peaceful; and urges all stakeholders, including voters, to spare no effort in working towards the same objective,” he said.

He told The PUNCH that INEC had   taken delivery of the 68.8 million PVCS and that the last batch of 3.4 million   cards   had been   sent to all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory   for distribution to all registered voters.

Idowu said, “We have taken delivery of all the PVCs, which is 68.8 million and they have been sent to all the states for distribution to the voters.

“The last batch of 3.4 million PVCs have been sent to   the field for distribution to the registered voters.”

The All   Progressives Congress and the Labour Party has hailed the commission for extending the PVC collection deadline.

“The action is commendable. It is a sign that the commission is a listening body and it is ready to conduct free and fair elections,” its National Publicity Secretary,   Lai Mohammed, told one of our correspondents.

The party however asked the Federal Government to help the commission by declaring a two-day public holiday to enable voters pick up their PVCs.

The party said states under its control   had agreed to declare public holidays this week, but said each state governor would pick the dates they prefer.

The APC caucus   in the House of Representatives also welcomed the decision but wondered why INEC allowed itself to be put under pressure before extending the PVC collection deadline.

“The voice and resolution of the House helped tremendously in putting pressure on INEC on the absolute need to give people the opportunity to vote and not to be disenfranchised,” its leader, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The caucus however admitted that “the extension and assurances from INEC will go a long way “ in making the elections hitch-free.

In passing the January 13 resolution, the House had noted that INEC was slow in the distribution of the PVCs.

The House observed that it was unlikely that the commission would give every registered voter a card before February 14.

Gbajabiamila was the one who moved the motion leading to the House resolution.

Part of the motion read, “INEC has been and is still issuing permanent voter cards to eligible voters in replacement of the temporary voter cards issued to Nigerians about four years ago.

“Concerned that the general elections being just four weeks or 31 days from now, it is very unlikely that the commission will be able to distribute the PVCs to all registered and eligible voters before the elections.

“Disturbed that if the current position of the commission (that only voters with the PVCs are qualified to vote) is not addressed, many registered and eligible voters will be disenfranchised in the 2015 general elections to the detriment of the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

“The House resolves that the commission should include in its election guidelines for the 2015 general elections a provision(s) allowing registered voters with the temporary voter card (TVCs) whose names are on record to vote during the 2015 general elections.”

Also, the LP applauded the commission for the extension, but wondered whether the one week extension would be enough.

In order to ease the distribution of the cards, it asked the commission to employ Ad hoc staff to handle the exercise.

I won’t probe military- Buhari

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Sunday denied a newspaper’ s report (not The Punch) that he would subject the military and other arms of government to probe, if elected as president in the February 14 election.

Buhari, made the clarification through a statement signed by Garba Shehu of the Directorate of Media and Publicity, APC Presidential Campaign Organisation.

The retired general, however, said his administration would decisively deal with all cases of impunity and corruption without minding whose ox would be gored.

The statement further reiterated Buhari’s stance that “when elected into office in February, the era of impunity will be over for the rogues. But there is no time for   engaging in probes or a witch-hunt.”

It also quoted Buhari as saying that he was passionately concerned about the conditions of the armed forces at the moment.

Buhari, according to the statement, lamented that despite the huge budgetary allocations, the country had failed to effectively deal with manifest security threats including the Boko Haram challenge.

The statement read in part, “What he (Buhari), said at every given opportunity is that he is keenly interested in knowing what has gone wrong, if any with the Army that he knew. When he has access to them as the Commander-in-Chief, he (Buhari) will like to hear from his commanders what are the problems they are dealing with so that they can be solved.

“In a democracy such as ours, all institutions of government, including the armed forces, are accountable. No country can achieve results in its counter-terrorism efforts when there is no transparency in the management of huge resources for the purpose.”

Over N30tn stolen under Okonjo-Iweala – Soludo

Renowned economist and a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Sunday alleged that over N30tn had been stolen under the watch of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Soludo, in a 10-page response to Okonjo-Iweala’s rebuttal of his earlier criticism of the management of the Nigerian economy under the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, said the nation was in for a very turbulent time this year because the economy had been grossly mismanaged.

The Federal Government had last Wednesday described the five-year tenure of Soludo as the governor of the CBN between 2004 and 2009 as a disaster to the banking sector.

The comment came on the heels of an earlier article by Soludo last Monday in which he claimed that the Nigerian economy under Jonathan had performed woefully.

Okonjo-Iweala had in a statement on Wednesday described Soludo’s as an “embittered loser in the Nigerian political space.”

But Soludo, in his new article, which was made available on Sunday, said if the prices of crude oil in the international market failed to rebound, Nigeria would face an unprecedented level of economic crisis with horrible attendant hardships for the citizenry.

“Our public finance is haemorrhaging to the point that estimated over N30tn is missing, or stolen, or unaccounted for, or simply mismanaged,” the former CBN governor stressed.

In the piece entitled, ‘Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the missing trillions’, Soludo said the sharp decline in the naira-dollar exchange rate from 158 a few months ago to 215 currently showed that trouble was already at the doorstep.

He added that “unless oil price recovers, this is just the beginning,” adding, “For the sake of Nigeria, I won’t keep quiet anymore!”

The former CBN boss said his earlier article was written out of concern that the 2015 election campaigns were being conducted in a manner that did not show that the economy was in a crisis.

“Part of my frustration is that five years after, everything I warned about has come to happen and we are conducting our campaigns as if we are not in a crisis. As a concerned Nigerian, I have a duty to speak out again,” he said.

Soludo, who gave the details of the N30tn allegedly stolen under Okonjo-Iweala’s watch, said, “Under you as the Minister of Finance and coordinator of the economy, the basket of our national treasury is leaking profusely from all sides. Just a few illustrations! First, you admit that ‘oil theft’ has reduced oil output from the average 2.3 – 2.4 million barrels per day to 1.95 mpd (meaning that at least 350,000 to 450,000 barrels per day are being ‘stolen’). On the average of 400,000 per day and the oil prices over the past four years, it comes to about $60bn ‘stolen’ in just four years.

“In today’s exchange rate, that is about N12.6tn. This is at a time of cessation of crisis in the Niger Delta and the amnesty programme. Can you tell Nigerians how much the amnesty programme costs, and also the annual cost for ‘protecting’ the pipelines and security of oil wells? And the ‘thieves’ are spirits?

“Second, my earlier article stated that the minimum forex reserves should have been at least $90bn by now and you did not challenge it. Rather, it is about $30bn, meaning that gross mismanagement has denied the country some $60bn or another N12.6tn. Now, add the ‘missing’ $20bn from the NNPC. You promised a forensic audit report ‘soon’, and more than a year later, the report itself is still ‘missing’. This is over N4tn, and we don’t know how much more has ‘missed’ since Sanusi cried out.

“How many trillions of naira were paid for oil subsidy (unappropriated?). How many trillions (in actual fact) have been ‘lost’ through customs duty waivers over the last four years? As coordinator of the economy, can you tell Nigerians why the price of Automotive Gas Oil, popularly called diesel, has still not come down despite the crash in global crude oil prices, and how much is being appropriated by friends in the process?

“Be honest: Do you really know (as coordinator and minister of finance) how many trillions of naira self- financing government agencies earn and spend? I have a long list but let me wait for now. I do not want to talk about other ‘black pots’ that impinge on national security.”

Soludo added, “My estimate, Madam, is that probably more than N30tn has either been stolen, or lost, or unaccounted for, or simply mismanaged under your watchful eyes in the past four years. Since you claimed to be in charge, Nigerians are right to ask you to account. Think about what this amount could mean for the 112 million poor Nigerians, or for our schools, hospitals, roads, etc.

“Soon, you will start asking the citizens to pay this or that tax, while some faceless ‘thieves’ are pocketing over $40m per day from oil alone.”

The former CBN governor also maintained that the banking sector consolidation exercise that he supervised was a huge success contrary to Okonjo-Iweala’s assertion that it failed woefully.

He described it as both “a revolution and a war, and most people thought it was impossible, but thank God we succeeded. “

Soludo said, “For the first time in Nigeria’s history, a policy of that magnitude was announced and the deadline kept with precision. We were courageous to revoke the licences of 14 banks, including those of my friends, in one day. The FT-Banker concluded that the scale, precision and cost of the transformation were unprecedented in the world. Before then, Malaysia had the least cost of banking consolidation at five per cent of the Malaysian GDP.

“It did not cost Nigerian taxpayers one penny. Twenty-five new and stronger banks emerged, but the powerful idea behind the consolidation ignited something even more powerful – the race to the top. Banks raised more capital, and even banks like First Bank, Zenith, GTB, etc. that did not merge with others went on capital raising several times. The consequence was higher levels of capitalisation and within two years, 14 Nigerian banks were in the top 1,000 banks in the world and two in the top 300 (no Nigerian bank was in the top 1,000 before I came).

“Even after I left office, still nine banks were in the top 1,000. Our vision was to have a Nigerian bank in the top 100 banks within 10 years. As I see the new Access Bank, Zenith, GTB, Fidelity, Diamond, UBA, FBN, FCMB, Skye, Stanbic IBTC, Union, Ecobank, etc., I cannot but feel that we have taken giant steps forward.

“Deposits and credit soared (from barely N1.2tn to over N7tn); new technologies (ATM and e-banking) boomed, and banks had 57,000 new jobs; mega businesses emerged (ask any major operator in the Nigerian economy their experience with banking and credit before and after Soludo; – the Dangotes, Arik, MM2, oil and gas operators etc.); capital market boomed and dominated by the banking sector.

“It was a new dawn for the Nigerian private sector. I have heard Dangote twice say that he would not be near as big as he is today without the banking consolidation. Many other stakeholders still say it today. FDI and portfolio inflows flooded into Nigeria. The world celebrated, and one single transformative idea has changed the face of the private sector and the economy forever. Banks became Nigeria’s first transnational corporations, with about 37 branches outside of Nigeria.”

He also said he would write about the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria later as a separate topic.(PUNCH)
