Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and superstar singer Shakira welcomed their second child into the world on Thursday night.
Shakira gave birth to a baby boy without complications in a scheduled
caesarean section at the Hospital Quiron Tecknon in Barcelona.
Pique, 27, and the Colombian pop-star, 37, announced the news in a statement shortly before midnight.
A name for the new-born, who arrives just over two years after the couple’s first child, Milan, is yet to be revealed.
Around 24 hours before the birth, Pique had played the full 90
minutes in Wednesday night’s 3-2 Copa del Rey victory over Atletico
Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.
As with their first child, Pique and Shakira will continue family
tradition and make the baby an associate member of FC Barcelona.
The celebrity couple have been together since 2010. They announced
their second pregnancy as well as the baby’s sex back in August 2014.

Chelsea agree deal to sign Cuadrado
Chelsea have agreed to sign Juan Cuadrado from Fiorentina with Mohamed Salah moving in the opposite direction on an 18-month loan deal, Goal can confirm.
The Premier League leaders will pay €33 million for the Colombia international, who starred at the 2014 World Cup and had attracted strong interest from Manchester United last summer.
Chelsea had previously been told that the player would not be allowed to move for less than his €35m release clause but were able to reach a compromise by including Salah as part of the deal.
The Egypt international, who joined the Blues last January from Basel, already had a similar agreement in place with Roma but Chelsea called a halt to that move once they learned of Fiorentina's interest in the player.
Despite Chelsea's confidence that a deal for Cuadrado could be struck, the Premier League leaders had sounded out alternative targets - including Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko - after seeing bids for the Colombian and Shakhtar Donetsk star Douglas Costa in a bid to keep their options open.
But an agreement has now been reached, with Salah, who has been unable to usurp Willian on the right flank and made just eight appearances in all competitions this season, heading to Florence.
Fellow out-of-favour winger Andre Schurrle has also been heavily linked with a Stamford Bridge exit in January, though manager Jose Mourinho insists the German remains a part of his plans.

Allegations that I support Boko Haram wicked —Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, described as wicked, the allegations that he was supporting the Boko Haram insurgency in the north eastern part of the country for political reasons.
Addressing a large crowd at the Ribadu Square
where the Presidential rally took place, Jonathan said no sane leader would
support insurgency of any type in a country that he presides over.
According to the president, his administration is
totally committed to reclaiming all the territories being occupied by Boko
Haram terrorists in Adamawa State, noting that from the earlier five local
governments being occupied by the terrorists, government forces have reclaimed
some, including Michika which he said was reclaimed yesterday morning.
He said: “Some people have insinuated that I am
behind Boko Haram and I say, may Allah forgive them. There is no human being
that will be the leader of his country and instigate crisis. Why should I bring
Boko Haram to Adamawa State?
“In 2011, I got 65 per cent of the votes in
Adamawa State. How can any mad person insinuate that I am in support of Boko
Haram for political reasons? God willing, we will recover all the remaining
local governments and join you in redeveloping Adamawa State again.”
The president noted that he supported the former
chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu,
for the governorship position of the state because he will join governement in
fighting insecurity in the country through his international contacts and
exposure.
National Chairman of the PDP, Adamu Muazu, who
announced the lifting of the suspension on both the former national Chairman of
the party, Bamanga Tukur as well as that of the exco of the state PDP enjoined
the people of Adamawa State to vote for the PDP “because of what PDP has done
and not what others have promised to do.”
The governor of Adamawa State, Bala Ngilari who
said the state had always belonged to the PDP promised that every stakeholder
in the state will work towards delivering the state to the PDP.
Kill PDP before it kills all of us, Buhari charges Nigerian
Presidential candidate of the All
Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari (ret), in Benin City,
yesterday, charged Nigerians to constitutionally kill the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP, through their votes before it kills Nigerians.
His declaration came as Governors
Rotimi Amaechi and Adams Oshiomhole of Rivers and Edo states faulted President
Goodluck Jonathan for failing the people of the region.
They spoke at the Benin City
presidential rally of the APC which held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
Some of the dignitaries at the well
attended rally were the Vice Presidential Candidate of the party, Professor
Yemi Osinbajo; Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, former Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode
Fayemi; Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dr. Pius Odubu; former Minister of State
for Works, Engr. Chris Ogienwonyi, and all APC candidates in the state.
Governor Amaechi said the admission
of the President in Port-Harcourt, Wednesday that he had not done anything for
the region was an admission of failure that should not be rewarded with another
four years.
Governor Oshiomhole on his part,
blamed the President for failing to tackle corruption, saying the President
kept a blind eye to the death of several graduates who were scammed during the
Immigration recruitment interviews last year.
General Buhari, who lamented that
every household in Nigeria suffered alleged PDP misrule in the past 16 years,
said Nigerians must ensure that they vote out the PDP on February 14, and
defend their votes, asserting that an APC government will find lasting solution
to corruption, unemployment, insurgency and poverty, which according to him,
were inflicted on Nigerians by the PDP.
Amaechi in responding to the claims
by the President in PortHarcourt that he had not done anything for the region
said: “The President admitted that he has done nothing in South-South in six
years. When he could not do anything in six years how will he do anything in
four years. I have told Rivers people, Eleme Petro chemical in Rivers State,
NAFCON, were done by Hausa-Fulani men. Our president who is our son has spent
six years but he did not do anything.
“All he has done is to enrich
himself and other people and our responsibility is to get a good president who
will do something for us and for Nigeria. And we thank God that the President
himself has admitted to failure. I call him “I will do President.” We will vote
out this “I will do President.” Once trust is betrayed you can never repair
it.”
We’ve forgiven Buhari- Ajasin family
FAMILY of the late Chief Adekunle
Ajasin,a former leader of the Yoruba socio-political organisation,
Afenifere, said they have forgiven Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari,
presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, for the
detention of their father in 1984 under Buhari’s military
administration.
The family cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party against using their late father’s arrest as a campaign to smear Buhari.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Chief
Tokunbo Ajasin, said in Akure on Thursday that his late father, who was
Ondo State governor from 1979 to the sacking of the second republic on
December 31, 1983, forgave Buhari before his death.
He said, “It will be totally wrong for
anybody to say that General Buhari jailed my father. No, that is not
correct. It was true that my father was detained under Buhari’s military
regime along with other former governors in Nigeria and two panels of
enquiry were consequently set-up to look into the allegations against my
father and others, but the panels found my father innocent and
exonerated him as well.
“What Buhari did then was part of
military policies and tradition. Though many Nigerians were not happy
with that but my father had since forgiven Buhari before his demise.
“Let me also tell you that as far as the
issue is concerned, the family of Ajasin had forgiven Buhari as well
because as Christians we should learn and exhibit the spirit of
forgiveness always. The Bible says father forgive us as we forgive those
who offend us.”
Tokunbo said he met Buhari at a function sometime ago and that they happily embraced each other, indicating that all was well.
He said himself and his sister, Mrs.
Jumoke Anifowose, were part of the crowd that received Buhari and his
running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at the Akure airport during his
presidential campaign rally in Ondo State.
Also, the Ondo State Coordinator of
Buhari/Osinbajo presidential campaign, Mr. Ife Oyedele, accused the PDP
of unduly capitalising on the Buhari/Ajasin saga to score cheap
political points.
He said the APC as a progressive party
should be more concerned about the welfare of Ajasin’s family than the
PDP that was antagonistic of the interest of the Yoruba race.
“You cannot cry more than the bereaved.
We are happy that the Ajasin family has come to clear the air on this
issue,” Oyedele said.
Gabriel Paulista: I joined Arsenal to win the biggest titles
New Arsenal signing Gabriel Paulista has outlined his intention to win trophies with the Gunners after finalising his transfer from Villarreal.
The 24-year-old completed an €15 million move to the Emirates earlier this week, with Joel Campbell heading the other way on loan, and became the Gunners’ second signing of the January transfer window in the process, following the arrival of Krystian Bielik from Legia Warsaw.
Arsenal remain on course to defend the FA Cup after Sunday's fourth round win at Brighton and face Monaco in the last 16 of the Champions League, and the Brazilian centre-half is determined to ensure the club do not finish the season empty-handed.
“I know that we have great players of a high standard, players who are real stars, because if they were not stars they wouldn’t be here,” he told the club’s official website.
“Arsenal is a very big team and it must always be competing for the biggest titles in the world. I have to repeat it - Arsenal must fight for all the most important titles around.”
Arsenal are currently fifth in the Premier League – 13 points behind league leaders Chelsea – and face a fifth round FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough.

PDP lifts Tukur’s suspension
The Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday announced the lifting of the
suspension of a former Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, announced the lifting of the suspension at the presidential rally of the party in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
Tukur was suspended in December 2014 for dragging the party before the court in his attempt to reclaim the chairmanship of the party, where he was forced to resign in January last year.(PUNCH)

Declare holiday for PVC distribution – SAN
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Sebastine Hon, has called on both
the federal and state government to declare public holiday to fast-track
the distribution of the Permanent Voter Card.
Hon made this call in a statement on Thursday warning that if the suggestion was not heeded, the ongoing debate on the shifting of the February polls anchored on poor level of collection of PVCs by registered voters could spark violence in the country.
The senior advocate who also opposed the call for the postponement of the February polls, asked state governors to take the lead in declaring holidays for the purpose of PVC collection.
He cited provisions of section 2(2) of the Public Holidays Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as empowering state governments to declare such holiday.
He stated, ” There is no single doubt that much disputation has been visited on the Nigerian political landscape, following the calls for and against shifting the February general elections. There is also no doubt that if not carefully managed, this debate and, a fortiori, any attempt to shift the said polls, may snowball into a political violence of unquantifiable proportions. May that day never come again in Nigeria!
“The dispute seems to be centered on the fact that many Nigerians have not collected their permanent voters’ cards. Suggestions that the Federal Government should declare some days as public holidays to enable registered voters who are yet to collect their cards to do so have so far not been heeded, even as time for the election is fast approaching.
“One sure way out is for the various state governments to individually designate some days as public holidays for this all-important exercise to be carried out by Nigerians wishing to exercise their civic responsibilities.
“The power of State Governments to designate some days as public holidays is derivable from section 2(2) of the Public Holidays Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, which is to the following effect:

Why Buhari will boycott BON presidential debate – APC
The Presidential campaign of the All Progressives Congress has said
its candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) and his running mate,
Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, will not participate in the Broadcast Organisation
of Nigeria organised electioneering debate.
According to the APC Presidential campaign, its candidate was staying away from the event because of the unhidden bias and campaign of calumny by key organisers of the programme, against the corporate political interest of the APC.
This position was contained in a statement signed by Mallam Garba Shehu, Director Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, in Abuja, on Thursday.
APC said the Nigeria Election Debate Group -powered debate, was fraught with fundamental errors from the outset, by wearing the toga of government control, especially being composed mainly of agencies and allies of the incumbent People’s Democratic Party’s administration.
The statement partly read, “A salutary inspection of the composition of NEGD brings into focus the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, National Television Authority, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and the Africa Independent Television (owned by a PDP chieftain).
“And going by the avalanche of inflammatory statements, misinformation and blatant lies being propagated by some of these media against our Party and candidates contrary to the Koffi Annan brokered Abuja Peace Accord, and the failure of these aggressors to desist and apologise, have left the APC Campaign with no option than to steer clear of any premeditated smear campaign that could be inimical to our prospective electoral success.”
The campaign spokesman further explained that the boycott by the APC should not be seen as disrespect to Nigerian voters, or an alibi for the party to dodge public scrutiny; but it must be viewed as an honourable right not to consent to any activity that could distract, demean, denigrate or derail the fast-moving train of the party.
Shehu noted that the APC remains a party of progressive intellectuals, genuine technocrats, successful businessmen and women, and most of all, eminent and courteous people of honour who would never condescend to the level of sadistic gutter propaganda, all in the name of political exigency and crass opportunism.
He pointed out that many Government-controlled media have clipped the wings of APC promotional advertisements on one excuse on the other adding that, until a court upturned their decision recently, the Nigerian Communications Commission shutdown some telecom portals for soliciting legitimate campaign funds from members of the public for APC.
Shehu also said, “Aside, elements close to sitting President Goodluck Jonathan have commissioned series of derogatory and death threat advertorials against the person, family and associates of the opposition leader, General Muhammadu Buhari.
This, he said, prompted the APC to send letters of complaint to the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of State Security, Advertisers Practitioners of Nigeria, Independent National Electoral Commission and the erring media that published or aired such offensive adverts or documentaries.
He expressed regret that none of our letters of protest has been attended to by the authorities.
Shehu stressed that whatever the incumbent President wants to do with the instrument of state to harass members of the opposition into humiliating submission would not work.
He maintained that the APC/Buhari campaign is now a people’s movement. The more they try to rubbish it, the more popular we are with the populace.
“We are not shadow-chasers or moonwalkers. The APC is concerned mainly with the lack of unity and security in Nigeria; plus the growing decimation of lives, property and territory of our great country due to preventable insurgency; the slumbering economy; decaying educational system; absence of jobs; poor public health; and the cancerous institutionalisation of corruption in our national life. You can’t fool the people all the time. Nigerians will vote out their oppressors come February 14.” He said.(PUNCH)

Cambridge University provides More Details On Buhari’s WASC Results
The University of Cambridge Local Examinations
Syndicate, UCLES, now Cambridge Assessment, has provided further details
on the West African School Certificate, WASC, results presented by
Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Candidate in the
February 14 presidential election.
In a new post on its website, the university confirmed result grades for the examination in 1961 were issued in numbers, not letters, as suggested by critics of Mr. Buhari who have dismissed the results he presented as fabricated.
According to Cambridge, “Examination results were classed in grades from 1 to 9”.
“1, 2,3,4,5 & 6 indicate a Pass with Credit; 7 & 8 indicate a Pass; 9 indicate a Failure,” the school said.
Results tendered by Mr. Buhari shows he had credits in English Language, Geography, Health Science, Hausa Language; failed in Mathematics and Woodwork, and had a pass in Literature in English.
In its post, Cambridge said for candidates to qualify for its certificate in 1961, they needed to pass English, and not necessarily Mathematics.
“To pass the School Certificate, candidates had to pass examinations in a variety of groups. It was compulsory to pass English Language, but not Maths, in order to gain the Certificate,” the university said.
The details followed intense controversy over whether Mr. Buhari, a former Head of State and retired Army General, completed his secondary education.
The Nigerian constitution requires any candidate running for the office of the President to have at least the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent.
The ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the campaign office of President Goodluck Jonathan accuse Mr. Buhari of lacking the requisite qualification for the office of the president.
Mr. Buhari, who ran for president in 2003, 2007 and 2011, repeatedly declared that copies of his academic records were with the military.
The former head of state also said original copies of his credentials were lost when his house was raided when he was in detention during the administration of Ibrahim Babangida who toppled his regime.
The Army at first said it had copies of Mr. Buhari’s results, but backtracked later, saying it had only a letter of recommendation from his principal at Katsina Provincial College, result grades without either the statement or certificate.
Responding, Mr. Buhari expressed surprise that the military could claim not to have his results, and insisted that he indeed completed high school and passed at Division Two level.
PREMIUM TIMES later exclusively published copies of Mr. Buhari’s WASC results as well as a master list containing the results of some of his classmates, obtained from his former secondary school, now Government College, Katsina.
But after the publication of the Statement of Results, some Nigerians, including President Jonathan and the PDP, dismissed the results as forged.
One of the allegations said Hausa language was not part of the Cambridge exams in 1961.
Another said Mr. Buhari’s results that year were recorded in alphabets, not in letters as Mr. Buhari claimed.
While Cambridge has declined to categorically confirm Mr. Buhari’s results, saying only the APC candidate could request or authorize such disclosure, the school posted a response to enquiries on the matter on their website authenticating some of the claims in Mr. Buhari’s result.
The University confirmed that according to the Regulations for 1961, African Language papers, including those for Hausa, were set for the West African School Certificate.
It also put the number of candidates who sat for the WASC Hausa examination in 1961 at 152.
“Our records show that Hausa was set in the Northern Region in 1961,” Cambridge said. The university also confirmed result grades in 1961 were issued in numbers, not letters,

My successors must be younger than me —Jonathan
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan
yesterday set an age barrier for a possible successor if he wins re-election,
saying that anyone above 57 years would not receive his support in 2019.
Speaking at a campaign rally in
Lafias, Nasarawa State the president also disowned the governorship aspiration
of his former minister of information, Mr. Labaran Maku, affirming he never
supported his move from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The President also promised to give
special attention to Nasarawa State on account of what he said is the proximity
of the state to Abuja.
Giving his determination to support
power transfer to the younger generation, the president said: “We want to
encourage young people because the future belongs to them. We will not take
leadership from you because you are the leaders of tomorrow. The
director-general of my campaign organisation, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, has mentioned
that my successor is going to be a younger person and that is what we will do.
‘’If you look at how we are going
you will find out that what he said is true. Obasanjo was 70 when he was
elected, the late President Yar’Adua was in his early 60s, I am about 60. So
the PDP is grading down from Obsanjo to me.(VANGUARD)
FA fine Chelsea boss Mourinho for referee comments
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been fined £25,000 for comments claiming there is a "campaign" to influence referees' decisions against his Chelsea side.
Mourinho made his comments after his side were denied a penalty in the1-1 draw with Southampton on 28 December.
The Football Association ruled Mourinho's quotes were "improper and brought the game into disrepute".
But the Blues boss, who was warned about his future conduct, was cleared of implying bias by referees.
Falling Euro has Cuadrado edging closer to Chelsea move
Chelsea's pursuit of Fiorentina star Juan Cuadrado is being aided by the falling Euro!
Chelsea remain in talks with the Italian club, but have yet to agree a fee for the 26-year-old.
Cuadrado's €35 million buyout clause, thanks to the Euro's decline, has dropped in value from £26.8m to £26.1m over the past few days.
Chelsea remain hopeful of convincing Fiorentina to accept an offer closer to £20m.
Concerning for the Blues is that Cuadrado's buyout clause will expire in the coming days.

Arsenal boss Wenger wants to try again for Barcelona striker Suarez
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reviving his long-term interest in Barcelona striker Luis Suarez.
Suarez famously was blocked from joining Arsenal last season by former club Liverpool.
The Sun says Wenger will have big money to spend next summer and has put the misfiring Barcelona forward at the top of his wish list.
Suarez completed a dream £75m move from Liverpool to Barca last summer, but has since struggled to find his best form.
The Uruguay superstar, 27, has scored just twice for the Catalan giants since returning to action in October following his four-month bite ban.
Wenger and Arsenal failed with a £40m plus £1 bid for Suarez in 2013.

as a slight on fellow actress, Ms. Aimakhu, who was recently rumoured to have
separated from her husband, Adeniyi Johnson. According to Ms. Ikeji, the two
actresses were previously not in good terms and Ms. Aimakhu had “shaded” Ms.
Akindele over the latter’s 2014 divorce.
Ms Akindele, through her management, said the blog post exposed her to “cynical
comments and hasty judgements”. “(The post has portrayed) Funke Akindele’s
brand in bad light,” her management said. “It has promoted unhealthy rivalry
where there is none.”
Ms. Akindele’s lawyer, in a seven paragraph letter
gotten by sources expressed that the post was “borne out of pure malice for our
client who has carved an inch (sic) for herself in the entertainment industry
whilst also inciting hatred between our client and Toyin Aimakhu on one hand
and our client and her fans on the other hand.” Ms. Ikeji was told to take down
the post, offer a retraction and provide the link to Ms. Akindeke’s team.
