The Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi
has said that he did not have to wait for a formal contract with the Nigeria
Football Federation, NFF, before coming back to his job because of the pleas
from respected Nigerians.
“I had to bow to the persuasive power of respected Nigerians
who are ‘big authorities’, he told journalists at a media parley with
journalists at the Transcorp Hotel, Calabar, ahead of the African Cup of
Nations qualifying encounter with DR Congo tomorrow, Saturday at U.J. Esuene
Stadium.
“First of all, this is my own country. If I had no love and
concern for the national football team, the Super Eagles I would not bother to
fly down here from the United States of America and nobody would have forced
me. I decided on my own to come and groom the team for the AFCON qualifying
matches against DR Congo and South Africa.
This is because some very good and respected Nigerians frankly talked to
me.”
He stressed that it is out of patriotism and respect he has
for those Nigerians that he came.
The Big Boss, as he is fondly called, lamented that there
have been a lot of interference in his job and would like that such be
curtailed so that he can concentrate and perform better.
Keshi said: “It is
important that I am allowed to do my work well without unnecessary
interference. They should stop coming into my job and I will not interfere in
another man’s work.”
