The Emir
of Kano, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, yesterday, called for good governance and
peace in the country.
SanusiThe Emir
who was accompanied by Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu and other
dignitaries during a courtesy call on Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of
Ijebu land, said no nation could develop if the people were not united,
insisting that there must be peace and love across all multi-ethnic divides.
He,
however, tasked political leaders to discharge their duties with honesty while
upholding their integrity to retain the confidence of the electorate, saying,
“people who don’t appreciate our diversity and uniqueness as a people are those
who don’t have knowledge. At the end of the day, we are all one.
“My prayer
is that as leaders, we will strengthen the bonds between our people because
whether we like it or not, we are a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country.”
“My hope
is that together we would strengthen the unity of this country by upholding the
tenets of our traditions. We need more progress with peace and love. Strife and
killings are totally unnecessary.”
The
Awujale in his remarks charged the Emir to use his wealth of experience in the
banking industry for the benefit of his people, saying leaders must always be truthful to society.
“I
discovered over the years that some politicians who were called to serve did
not really represent their people but themselves. We must have the courage to
tell our leaders the truth at all times. Even when they refuse to heed our cry,
leave them to their maker. We must be very honest with what we do as most of us
shall give account of our stewardship before God,” Adetona said.
In his own
remark, Akiolu said that the ability to surmount the nation’s challenges was
everyone’s responsibility adding that Nigerians must continually pray for
unity, saying We must all unite together and pray for the corporate existence
of this country.
He urged
the President, Goodluck Jonathan to remain strong as he addresses the nation’s
challenges saying they will continue to support him.
The Emir
was received by the local Hausa Community in Ijebu-Ode as well as 36 monarchs
from across Ijebuland.
