Medical report’ll determine if Suntai can resume -Acting gov

Acting Governor Taraba State, Garba Umar
The Acting Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Garba Umar, has said the expected medical report on the state of health of the state Governor, Mr. Danbaba Suntai, will determine if he is capable of returning to work or not.

Umar, who spoke in Abuja on Thursday when he visited the members of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, said the report was not aimed at sacking the ailing governor as is being speculated from some quarters.

He regretted that the state was thrown into confusion following the air crash involving the governor on October 25, 2012.

The acting governor however praised the national leadership of the party for coming to the rescue of the state, adding that this action has helped in stabilising it.

Umar, who was accompanied by some of his aides and lawmakers, said that there were reports that the health of the governor was already improving following the numerous treatments he has undergone abroad.

He said, “I’m most delighted to be here once again. It is also heartwarming to note that your doors have always been wide open for us on each occasion that we come calling. This clearly shows that you are always there for us and we cherish this great feat.

“I’m here as a son in his father’s house. I have the full confidence and assurance that I will not only feel at home on this occasion but also go back home more blessed.

“I thank you for all that you have done and have been doing to stabilise our state and ensure that it remains on the path of peace, progress and development.

“Your timely intervention, guidance and counsel have helped us greatly since the unfortunate air incident involving my boss, the Executive Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency, Governor Danbaba Suntai on the 25th of October, 2012.

“The state of affairs in our state has generally been stable since the intervention as His Excellency Governor Suntai continue to receive medical care within and outside the country.

“As can be clearly seen over this period, the medical condition of Governor Suntai is improving. And we are waiting for the doctors to certify him to be fit to resume his duties.”

He said the insistence by a powerful cabal that Suntai should assume office has again raised tempers in the state.

He said some people have already started making unfounded rumours in the state that the medical panel set up by the members of the State House of Assembly was meant to remove the governor.

This, he said, was not true.

The acting governor said, “As you must have by far noticed, we have once again stepped into a tense situation occasioned by the second return of His Excellency, Governor Danbaba Suntai from treatment abroad.

“The insistence by a powerful bloc on the state that I hand over to my boss even against professional advice is at the centre of the current impasse.

“This has forced the State Executive Council to request the State House of Assembly to set up a medical panel to verify the state of health of our beloved governor.

“I’ve heard people say the motive behind the setting up of the panel is to remove the governor. This is not true. It is merely intended to determine if I can hand over to him or not.”

Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Uche Secondus, and adviser to the party, who spoke on the behalf of NWC members, said the party was proud of the achievements of the acting governor.

He particularly mentioned the maintenance of security in the state, which is part of North-East, a region being ravaged by members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

He urged the acting governor not to relent in this regard, especially as the nation prepares for the 2015 elections.
