His Excellency, Senator Abiola
Ajimobi, the Executive Governor of Oyo State has commended Nigerian Breweries
Plc on its excellent Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
The Governor
made the commendation at the commissioning of an ultra-modern School block, a library,
office blocks and toilet facilities donated by Nigerian Breweries Plc to
Community High School, Olukeye Asejire in Egbeda Local Government Area of Ibadan,
Oyo State.
Speaking at the commissioning
which brought together high government officials in the Education sector in the
state, community leaders, staff and students of the school as well as
representatives from Nigerian Breweries Plc, the governor said: “This donation
is a commendable quality service delivery by Nigerian Breweries Plc. It is an
impressive building that is an epitome of Corporate
Social Responsibility by the company”.
In his remarks, the Managing
Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Nicolaas
Vervelde, represented by the Corporate Affairs Adviser, Mr. Kufre Ekanem said
the project was part of the company’s commitment to the development of
education in Nigeria, and represents its modest identification with the efforts
of the state government to improve the quality of learning in Oyo state.
He
revealed that the block of classrooms and library are fully equipped with the
necessary furniture with plans under way to stock the Library with relevant
books as part of the company’s commitment to promoting a healthy reading
culture among secondary school students.
The MD said the project was funded by
the Nigerian Breweries/Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund: “The fund was set
up in 1994 to anchor our support initiatives for education in Nigeria. This
fund has over the years been very active in supporting the course of education
and learning in Nigeria across all levels and regions.
Some of these the
project undertaken include; infrastructural upgrade in institutions of higher
learning, donation of Computers, laboratories, school blocks, institution of
Book prizes, as well as sponsorship of the National Reading Competition, and
recently a Career Guidance and Counselling programme, known as Beyond the
School, for secondary school students.”
Community High School, Olukeye
Asejire, is the first secondary school in Asejire, a border town between Oyo
and Osun States. The School only recently commenced teaching and learning
activities in September 2013 in a block of 3 classrooms built by the Local
government for the primary school in the community. The donation from Nigerian Breweries Plc
which comprises a block of 6 classrooms, a library, Principal's and
Administrative offices, Staff room and 4 toilets are the first structures the
school located in a community of 40 villages can now boast of.
