Barcelona midfielder Xavi admits he was close to joining New York City FC over the summer.
Xavi says new coach Luis Enrique convinced him to stay.
"The season was over and I was disappointed to be on the bench for the game against Atletico Madrid and with a new coach incoming with his own ideas and players, I felt that my time at the club was up," said the veteran to Sport.
"He (Enrique) told me I was going to be a very useful member of the squad, that if I showed I was up for it,
I'd play, that I could still be competitive. He said to have a good think about it because Barça were going to have a good year. I took a day to make my decision.
"Leaving Barça would have been a big screw-up."
