Gyan wants tournament despite Ebola fears

GHANA captain Asamoah Gyan has backed CAF’s decision to go ahead with the staging of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations despite fears over the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.

CAF are pushing ahead with their decision to organize the tournament at its originally scheduled dates despite the pullout of Morocco as hosts.

The continental football governing body is now in the process of finding a new host for the competition despite several calls to have the competition postponed or even canceled.

Hosting the 2015 AFCON is seen by many as the easiest way to perpetuate the spread of the deadly virus on the continent, which has killed thousands in the worst affected areas.

But Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan in contrast to the position held by many African players to postpone or cancel the tournament, insist the competition must go on as planned as steps are taken to find a cure for the deadly disease.

“This is the time we need to support and see how to cure the disease [Ebola],” he said.
“If our brothers, our neighbours are having this problem, this is the time we need to support them and not to neglect them.

“For me, I think the African Cup should proceed, it has to be played whether in Morocco or anywhere.

“I heard stories about cancelling the tournament and I don’t think it is a good thing to cancel the tournament.

“What I think is we should just support the countries that have been affected by the disease and to move on.”

The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to kick off on January 15 and to end on February 8.
