Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has come out to denounce
the existence of a group identified as the Guild of Sports Editors
which had been making statements since the crisis facing the Glass House
broke out.
According to a statement signed by Andrew Abah, the Secretary General
of National SWAN, “for the second time in recent weeks, an illegal
group is bent on existing in the name of ‘ Guild of Sports Editors’.
This is inspite of SWAN’s earlier statement disowning the group. SWAN
still maintains its stance that the group is illegal until it embraces
due process in its formation.”
The statement added, “The group consisting of only a few Lagos-based
Sports Editors does not have the requisite tenets to be afloat moreover,
the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has never at any point in time
notified SWAN of the existence of such a body. As Editors, they should
apply to be inducted as members of the one and only Guild of Editors
where they ought to belong.
The National secretariat of SWAN is therefore urging hose behind the sectionalist and parochially motivated ‘Guild
of Sports Editors’ to desist from doing so and rather embrace the
process in actualising their dreams as such will no longer be tolerated
by the only recognised sports writing body SWAN.
