At least 5, 448 National Youth Service Corps, NYSC,
members will be discharged Thursday in a low key event in Lagos State,
western Nigeria.
The fanfare which heralds the annual passing out parade, P.M.NEWS gathered, will not hold throughout all the states of the federation.
According
to Mrs. Belinda Faniyi, Lagos State Assistant Director of NYSC who
spoke with our correspondent, Thursday morning, the fresh graduates have
been asked to pick up their discharge certificates at designated
centres across the state.
The Head, Media and Press
Relations of the NYSC stated that “there won’t be the usual fanfare that
heralds the yearly event. Instead, we shall have a low key event where
every corps member will end service quietly.
“There are
several designated centres across the state where we have asked these
fresh graduates to pick up their discharge certificates and leave for
their various destinations.”
When P.M.NEWS
correspondent asked to know if the fear of the deadly Ebola Virus
Disease (EVD) prompted the absence of fanfare, she said it was an order
which she had not further knowledge about.
“The absence
of fanfare is not limited to Lagos State alone. It is a nationwide.
That shows that it was not planned in the state in isolation of other
states.
“I do not have any other information as regards
the reason the fanfare was cancelled this year. That’s just the order
we have been asked to follow all over the country,” Faniyi explained.
